She admits to speculating about many aspects of a subject which by its very nature is mostly subjective, but by drawing from her own experiences demonstrates how useful it can be to examine one's dreams to understand the self better.
And this is an honest attempt to do just that.
It's no dream dictionary, clearly stating from the start the futility of such generalisations over the language of symbolism and how personal interpretation is dependant on a combination of many personal factors.
I found the section on sleep dysfunction helpful as insomnia can be a frequent visitor in the early hours...I had to laugh at the irony of the timing on that occasion!
Personally, I found the latter half of the book resonated more as the author moved away from the rational and analytical to the magical and intuitive - reflecting this side of her own nature. The liminal time of being on the edge of sleep and the possibility of magical experience she mentions; show perfectly how peering beneath the dreamy surface of the mind can often bring gifts of wisdom and healing.
Into the Wilderness (chapter nine) is a wonderful look at re-wilding our lives to be more naturally attuned to what is healthy and gives us balance. Stepping away from the over-stimulation of a mad world where sensory bombardment from all angles reminds us that the need for rest and enough sleep is vital to our sanity and health on every level.
In Pagan Dreaming, Nimue Brown has opened up and loosened up. Like the diviner shaking a handful of stones and casting them to the earth she has relinquished the need to control... the very thing she writes about...
'Good dream sharing is about being more human, more honest, open and authentic...' and not only has she achieved this as a writer but by example, as a teacher.
A brave move. It takes courage to be all of those things.
Dreaming is the stuff of inspiration if we open up to it - that is key to its gifts.
Well done to this talented author for sharing the gift of her words and her experience with us.
Pagan Dreaming is an important book for anyone wanting to peer beneath the surface of who they really are and to explore the world of their own dreams. It's the wake up call to listen and take notice of what they are showing us, to find the magic and use it.
And if we are brave enough to take her word for it... Nimue Brown tells us how.
